Land Rehabilitation Project

An area used as a tailings deposit for more than 30 years was rehabilitated as a wetland in 2011. Now known as the Coffey Grounds after an employee who worked in the area for many years, the six hectare area was landscaped with slopes and a small pond, fertilized with chicken manure and seeded with oats and other hardy plants. In the following autumn, the fallen plant stalks made great insect habitat and initiated the formation of a soil layer. Different seeds and more fertilizer will be used over the next few seasons until a viable soil is established.
