Sustainability
At IOC we are committed to becoming a premier mining organization in North America. To achieve this goal, the way we do our work every day at IOC is just as important as the work that we deliver. Our commitment to health, safety, environment and communities (HSEC) is fundamental to how we do business.
Tailings Management

Responsibly managing waste from mining operations is essential, as is being transparent with our stakeholders about our tailings facilities and how we manage them.

Global Industry Standard for Tailings Management – Sept-Îles
IOC Sept-Îles’ tailings storage facility adheres to Rio Tinto’s Safety Standards, which emphasize safe operations for all. In addition, in 2020, Rio Tinto voluntarily chose to comply with the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) to prioritise safety at every stage of a facility’s lifecycle.

Global Industry Standard for Tailings Management – Labrador City
Based on the work carried out in Sept-Îles in 2023, IOC started a dialogue with the public on its tailings operations in Labrador City. This was done in anticipation of the 2025 public disclosure for the tailings facility, planned in accordance with the Global Industry Standard for Tailings Management. IOC held meetings with community members and Indigenous partners to discuss how its operations function and the mitigation measures in place to prevent the tailings from discharging outside of the permitted boundaries. The feedback from of the partners will be taken into consideration when IOC updates its operational plans and engages in future activities.
