Procurement Processes

Our procurement activities are designed to ensure a fair evaluation and selection process, based on appropriate methods of competition among qualified suppliers of goods and services, is consistently applied to all prospective suppliers. We also ensure the intellectual property of suppliers is protected.

Suppliers and contractors will be chosen on the basis of:

  • Ability to meet our stated needs and required standards
  • Health, safety and environmental considerations
  • Quality and service
  • Competitive pricing
  • Technical capabilities
  • Consistency with our values

IOC Supplier Standards

Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) are key values across the Rio Tinto group. Our target is zero incidents, for employees, suppliers and contractors working at our sites. Our focus on HSE performance and compliance extends to all existing and potential on-site suppliers and contractors.

We expect suppliers to maintain compliance with all IOC health and safety requirements. We also expect suppliers to demonstrate commitment to responsible health management programmes and the elimination of workplace illness. For more information suppliers may refer to The Way We Work and the Rio Tinto Supplier Code of Conduct for further detail and supporting references.

The Standards for Suppliers (“Standards”) are IOC's fundamental expectations from its suppliers. These standards include expectations of business integrity, environmental compliance and employment practices. All Suppliers and their subsidiaries, including all subcontractors, will be held to these standards. For more information on these standards please see the Rio Tinto Supplier Code of Conduct. When the specific requirements of the standards are different, the most restrictive rules apply.

Additional Information

IOC scoring of submitted bids will also be based on businesses ability to demonstrate proactive steps to increase representation of women and other traditionally underrepresented groups. IOC may elect to not work with or cease to work with suppliers who do not meet these expectations. Businesses wishing to become suppliers or contractors to IOC must:

  • Take proactive steps to increase representation of women and other traditionally underrepresented groups and to implement these initiatives in a timely manner, taking advantage of training and hiring periods.
  • Provide all employees with the opportunity to voluntarily self-identify their diversity status.
  • Ensure job postings invite applications from women and other traditionally underrepresented groups.
