IOC receives Miner of the Year and Environmental Stewardship Awards

IOC received Miner of the Year and Environmental Stewardship Awards at Newfoundland and Labrador Mineral Resources Review 2023!

The Canadian Institute of Mining's Newfoundland and Labrador Mineral Resources Review is taking place this week in St. John's, NL. At Wednesday night's awards ceremony, IOC proudly received the two awards described below.

Miner of the Year

The Canadian Institute of Mining recognizes Rio Tinto IOC's commitment to providing value and continuity for their customers, employees, communities and shareholders through their unique mine to port approach, taking advantage of their full integration and wholly owned infrastructure, to deliver high-quality concentrate and pellets to customers across the globe.
With a business strategy including decarbonization and production of one of the lowest carbon-intensity high-grade iron ore products in the world, IOC DR pellets have the potential to reduce the carbon intensity of each tonne of steel by more than 2/3 compared with current smelting and furnace technology. We can also take pride in ensuring our products are of consistent, reliable and replicable quality; within cargoes and between cargoes.

Environmental Stewardship Award

For our long-term vision for biodiversity and our commitment to sustainable mining, we received the Manager's Award for Environment. This recognition is part of our efforts in line with our biodiversity conservation strategy.

In 2019, IOC launched the Biodiversity Conservation Strategy. This project aims to quantify and monitor biodiversity on IOC properties in Labrador and Quebec in three study areas: Labrador City, the QNS&L Railway and their port of Sept-Îles. With input from IOC and QNS&L employees, biodiversity information was analyzed to identify important flora and fauna species, communities, and habitats on their properties. The statuses of these important biotic elements on IOC properties serve as indicators of biodiversity health.

The award was accepted by Tina Cassel, Senior Coordinator, Projects, Environment, on behalf of IOC.

Congratulations to the entire team for your contribution to these successes!
